The 2006 Lathen maglev train accident occurred on September 22, 2006 when a Transrapid magnetic levitation (or "maglev") train collided with a maintenance vehicle near Lathen, Germany, killing 23 people. It is unrealistic to discourage the development of maglevs because of one train crash, especially when it carries less … The accident however proved that the German maglev did not derail even though it rammed into a 50 ton maintenance vehicle at 125 mph (200 kph). This was the first ever fatal accident on a maglev train. Maglev (derived from magnetic levitation) is a system of train transportation that uses two sets of magnets, one set to repel and push the train up off the track, and another set to move the elevated train ahead, taking advantage of the lack of friction.Along certain "medium-range" routes (usually 320 to 640 km [200 to 400 mi]), maglev can compete favorably with high-speed rail and airplanes.
